Hamburg, Germany: A Toddler Pissing on the sidewalk, a Circus, and Prostitutes

Name all the things I saw the day I left Berlin and went to Hamburg.

I got up early in the morning and found one of the few shops open on a Sunday. I bought some bread, had breakfast, packed and left for the train station. The train was late and overcrowded. I hadn’t reserved a seat, so I was left to wander the aisles of two cars with both of my packs on, looking for an available seat. I was walking by a few cabins when a small child crawled out in front of me. He found a piece of food lying on the ground, picked it up, and shoved it directly into his mouth, devouring half his hand too. Then he got up on his feet and started stumbling around the narrow passage between the door of the cabins and the wall of the car. I kept dancing around him to avoid his outstretched hands; there was no way I was gonna let that bacteria sponge get anywhere near me.

I finally found a seat and within a few hours was arriving in Hamburg’s Hauptbahnhof.

Nugget was gonna meet me in front of the McDonald’s, but when I got there, I didn’t see him. I realized the train had arrived ahead of schedule, so I looked around for a bar to grab a drink while I waited. But before I could walk away a woman approached me and asked me if I was Bj. Turns out Nugget forgot he wasn’t going to be able to meet me at the station, so he sent his girlfriend’s friend to meet me there. It was a little awkward, but then again it was Nugget.

Enis was a flight attendant and Nugget’s girfriend Adriana (“Adi”) frequently babysat her son Lewis. Lewis was in the back seat as Enis and I drove through Hamburg to meet up with Nugs and Adi. Lewis was hilarious, and every now and then, when his mother would tell him something or correct him when he skips “7” in saying the numbers from 1 to 10 , he would exclaim “Nein!!” and then say the opposite.

Turns out Nugget was at the Circus with Adi, her sister and her Dad. Halfway there, we had to pull over so Lewis could take a piss. Enis escorted him just off the sidewalk and he pissed into the bordering low bushes. I sat and waited in the car, listening to kids songs in German. Lewis climbed back in and flashed me a wide grin. Ah, to be young again.

We got to the Circus at intermission and finally found Nugs and Adi. I could’ve snuck into the tent for the second act, but that would’ve left Enis outside by herself, and I felt kinda bad, since she had kept me company after the trip. She, Lewis and I walked around outside, had a drink at a refreshment tent and Enis also pointed out some things on my Berlin map that I should see.

After the show finished, we went back to Nugs’ apartment, changed and then headed out. We walked around the city and Nugs and Adi pointed out some of the main sites, but after the last few days, I just wanted a beer. We went to a bar in the Reeperbahn where Nugs was trying to get work. The Reeperbahn is the street that houses Hamburg’s red light district. It’s short drag that manages to pack in large amount of kebab shops, sex shows, adult stores, bars and clubs. The theatres had “spokespeople” out front trying to bring in business and patrolling the streets were prostitutes. It reminded me a little of Sydney’s Kings Cross.
